blog.torproject.orgNew Release: Tor Browser 14.5.8 | Tor ProjectTor Browser 14.5.8 is now available from the Tor Browser download page and also from our distribution directory.

I just updated my phone to the new version of Android and oh boy I have never immediately hated a UI update like this before.

All the icons and UI elements are so large and ugly. It all just looks so bad

So here's a tech nightmare nobody's talking about:

Google's rolling out their new developer verification rules for Android starting in September 2026. Every app then needs to be registered with Google, even if you're sideloading or using alternative app stores like Samsung's Galaxy Store. 📱

Sounds reasonable until you realise: Huawei can't comply because they're literally banned from doing business with Google under US sanctions.

So what happens to the millions of people using Huawei watches and fitness bands with their Samsung or other Android phones? Currently Huawei Health is installed via the Galaxy Store for people using these devices on Samsung phones. But this means the Huawei Health app gets blocked. Your fitness tracker stops working. All your data, all your workouts, all that expensive hardware, gone.

Probably also not just Huawei either. Any Chinese manufacturer under US sanctions could face the same problem. Google's created a collision between US geopolitical trade policy and their verification system that's going to break legitimate use cases for millions of users.

And Samsung? Total silence. They can't push back without risking their relationship with Google, so they're just staying quiet and hoping someone else fixes it. (EU maybe? 🤔🇪🇺)

Google keeps saying Android is "open" but they're asserting control over every single app installation on certified devices. The Galaxy Store doesn't give you any protection here either, Google's verification requirement applies there too.

We're about to find out what happens when geopolitics meets app distribution policies, and regular users are going to be the ones who suffer.

My instance doesn't support quooting yet so thoughts on last boost on Google stopping you from loading 'unapproved' (by them) apps.

I have critical apps via F-Droid:

DavX - calendar sync
Gadgetbridge - fitness tracking
Openreads - books

But alternatives generally won't support:

Banking apps - to authorise payments at a minimum
WhatsApp - please don't say 'use Signal' (I do, non-techies don't)
NHS app - terms say they may report you to law enforcement (yes really)

I'm surprised that many people just seem to realize that the golden cage by #Apple is actually a golden cage! 🤷

What have you thought when you decided for that (overpriced) #lockin situation?

Of course, an #iOS device doesn't really belong to you. It's not up to you which apps you may install. You can't decide on delayed update slots. It's Apple's #cloud only. And Apple's history of business decisions is full of statements that are purely for the benefit of excluding alternatives for political and economic reasons.

Apple will never be on your side. It will always be on the side of it's shareholders and - of course - any US dictatorship that will be in power.

If this doesn't fit your set of requirements, get rid of Apple devices and use something else as long as Google hasn't destroyed #Android as well. With #Pixel (8+) and #GrapheneOS, you have the most power over your device+data, at the moment.

So, I sort of hate iOS and Android; I'm definitely not a fan of Apple or Google. Are there any reasonable options for a smartphone outside of those two?

I was looking at Sailfish OS, which seems nice (and can run Android apps for those things that need it), but it runs on Jolla phones, and those don't ship to Canada. 🇨🇦

The most recent Android update on Pixel had two undesirable settings changes that I can't figure out if I can reverse:

1) When unlocking my phone, it now vibrates. I do not want it to vibrate when unlocking. I know there's an option to turn off all vibrations, but I don't want that as I still want it to vibrate for calls.

2) Previously, most app icons on the home screen were grayscale (I think this was a setting I turned on a few years ago and forgot about?) Now every app icon is in full color.

EDIT: The second change only occurs when using a third-party launcher: with the default Pixel Launcher I still get gray icons.

Can I revert either of these change?

I'm seeing a number of posts about folk thinking of leaving #AndroidDev due to Googles policy changes.

For clarity I left the #Android world this year, and largely for those reasons.

I bought a T-Mobile G1 on the first day. I've built SDKs and firmware for Android, I have commits in the AOSP. I built (and sold) an app store in the early days. I also worked on the Android team at Google for a while.

Android, to me, is now a Google product. Not the open platform it was.

My advice; Just do it.

Heads up to anyone doing #Mobile #ReverseEngineering and #PenetrationTesting: I've just ported my @NowSecure #Frida instrumentation scripts (#iOS and #Android) to Frida 17, which introduced some breaking changes in the API.

The original, battle-tested scripts from 2017 are preserved as release 0.1 for retro compatibility and historical reference.

Google details Android developer certification requirement, and it’s as bad as we feared

Google has been on a bit of a marketing blitz to try and counteract some of the negative feedback following its new developer verification requirement for Android applications, and while they're using a lot of words, none of them seem to address the core concer

#android battery consumption

Somehow this doesn't look that great. Total phone screentime was less than 2 hours. Yet I'm now at 16℅ at the end of the day. 🤔

I took two pictures which triggered #Nextcloud to upload them.

I read some news articles with my web browser (#fennec)

I fooled around with AI (#lumo)

I didn't even open #AntennaPod 😭

But overall this is just way too much battery consumption on a phone that is just 7months old. (#pixel8a)

Fennec seems to stay active a lot in the background.
