A Tennessee mainstream news piece went out yesterday covering Patriot Front and including detailed aerial photographs of their compound in the east of the state.

While we're glad that this information is reaching a wide audience, and overall Phil Williams has done fantastic work covering the far right, we'd also like to note that our group is the one that originally exposed Ian Michael Elliott in 2021 and also first discovered and published the location and ownership of the compound in 2024.

We're not mentioning our original pieces because we're in it for the credit, but because it's better for everyone when news sources cite original antifascist grassroots research. The more exposure our pieces get, the more likely it is we get tips on white supremacist activity.

News Channel 5 Nashville (WTVF) · 'This isn't your granddad's KKK.' Inside the influential hate group that's expanding in TennesseeBy Phil Williams

A self-proclaimed “tribe” of racist heathens is building a compound on a 122-acre property in Tellico Plains, eastern Tennessee. This group overlaps with Patriot Front (PF), a fascist organization with members nationwide, and the “Church of Aryanity,” a racist cult that refers to Adolf Hitler as “the Great One.” The leader of the Tennessee “tribe” is Brian Culpepper, who spent a decade in the white supremacist National Socialist Movement (NSM) and was its PR Director for several years.

In 2022, Patriot Front used the large property—mostly woodland but with cleared areas—to train its members for street demonstrations. Last year, PF members traveled to work construction on the property, including a large building intended as a combined martial arts dojo, heathen temple, and home for PF member, Ian Michael Elliott. As construction on the land progresses, the property will host increasingly large racist gatherings. At least equally dangerous, the “tribal land” will bring together far-right martial artists, aspiring street brawlers from fascist “Active Clubs,” and some of the most violent fringes of the neo-Nazi scene. It already provides a home for committed PF members. By documenting this compound and revealing its location, we hope to warn eastern Tennessee residents about the white supremacist threat in their midst.

Patriot Front lost in court today and, while they'll never actually pay all of what they now owe, it's nice that they just got hit with a good seven figures in damages: $2,755,000 in total.

===
A federal judge on Monday ordered the white supremacist group Patriot Front and its leader to pay more than $2.7 million in damages to a Black musician for violating his civil rights by attacking him in Boston’s Back Bay in 2022 during a “flash march” through the city over the Fourth of July weekend.

The assault on Charles M. Murrel III as he walked along Dartmouth Street on his way to the Boston Public Library to play his saxophone was encouraged by the group’s leader, Thomas Rousseau, who led the marchers and “glorified” the attack afterward by celebrating a video clip that had been posted online, US District Judge Indira Talwani wrote in a 27-page decision.

This is a useful piece on neo-Nazi infiltration of martial arts contests. However, it gives the impression that Ian Elliott is no longer part of Patriot Front. As we and others have pointed out, Elliott remains a high-profile, active PF member. His handle on the Telegram messaging application even provides his alias within that organization, followed by the letters "PF" to indicate his organizational affiliation.

The Daily Beast · ‘Family Friendly’ Gym Training Partner Identified as Alleged Neo-NaziBy Sean Craig

This is a pretty big catch in the US white nationalist scene.

Kai Liam Nix (22) is both a member of Patriot Front and the former admin of the Appalachian Archives (AA) channel on Telegram (later rebranded as "American Archives" before it shut down last spring).

AA was really active last year doxxing journalists, researchers, and anyone who was on the outs with the neo-nazi scene. It particularly blew up on Telegram through its collaboration with the Tennessee Active Club (TAC), a prominent, self-proclaimed "actual, literal Nazi," and a sleazy little recruiting crew calling itself Patriot Youth during last year's mayoral race in Franklin, Tennessee, just outside Nashville. (TAC was led at the time by Sean Kauffmann, who had to step down earlier this year after his most recent round of domestic violence charges).

You may recall that race due to candidate Gabrielle Hanson's open acceptance of support from local neo-nazi factions like these.

At any rate, that whole nazi circuit operating in Middle Tennessee was getting very aggressive for a while last year, though I haven't kept up more recently. And what's more disturbing is that Nix, the AA admin, is in the US Army, 82nd Airborne Division, stationed at Fort Liberty in North Carolina. According to this report, he has been charged with “illicit sales of firearms and lying on a background check," which is an indication of the actual danger a little shit like this poses.

Solid article here. Worth reading.

Southern Poverty Law Center‘We Will Fight!’ The Soldier Waging War Against America from Fort LibertyA member of the white nationalist hate group Patriot Front who appears to operate a social media account that disclosed personal information about perceived political enemies – including journalists, left-leaning activists, politicians and community members – is an active-duty soldier in the U.S. Army, a Hatewatch investigation has revealed.

While much of the world in a post-Charlottesville environment has moved on to primarily focus on politicized, mainstreamed fascism in the Pig Empire, scholars and antifascist observers have by necessity also continued to track the organizational efforts and activities of neo-Nazis groups, street fascists and far-right gangs. You may not hear about them as much on the news these days, but violent fascist groups haven't disappeared in the time between 2017 and now; in fact, they're become more dangerous, organized, and resilient against efforts to stop them. This in turn means that as mainstreamed fascist political movements gain power in the Pig Empire, they have effective irregular armies of brownshirts to call on to do their dirty work; a situation that will be ominously familiar to anyone who has studied 20th century fascist movements in interwar Europe - like you know, the Nazis, Italian fascism under Mussolini, and the Francoist movement in Spain.

This August report by Jacob Wagner from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue looks at two such groups, Patriot Front and Active Clubs, to discuss how their organizational methods have changed to make them far more dangerous and resistant to opposition after the disastrous (for white nationalist street thugs) Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville:

Patriot Front and Active Clubs: Two modern models of white nationalist organizing

"Over the last decade, the organizational structures of the white nationalist movement have evolved to adapt to everchanging political and social landscapes. Groups across the broader movement have learned from their failures, resulting in restructuring efforts to make the groups more resistant to law enforcement disruption, reducing the reliance on a single leader or personality, and boosting opportunities for recruitment. The aftermath of the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville represented a blow to the white nationalist movement. While many groups benefited from the increased attention, the wave of arrests, doxxings, and general exposure of group members resonated through the community and showed its vulnerability to both law enforcement disruption and measures taken by ideological opponents like antifascist groups. In the wake of this dislocation, analysts identified extremist groups discussing restructuring and changing tactics to adapt to the post-Charlottesville era of organizing. This Dispatch examines two groups in the US, Patriot Front and the Active Club network, and details how these groups have adapted, becoming harder to disrupt and more appealing to potential recruits.

Patriot Front’s strict hierarchy and the Active Club network’s emphasis on decentralization work in tandem toward their shared goals while withstanding attempts at disruption, posing new challenges for those seeking to counter their efforts."

The key takeaways here are that violent white nationalist groups have responded to pressure from both antifascist action and law enforcement efforts (such as they are) to stop them by completely reorganizing how their movements work. In the case of Patriot Front, this has involved establishing a strict hierarchal leadership chain and widespread compartmentalization. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Active Clubs, followers of Robert Rundo, and the larger movement that refers to themselves as "White Nationalism 3.0" have adopted a decentralized, "leaderless movement" model copied from early 80's era Klansmen; although ominously they appear to be a good deal better at operating that way than their white nationalist predecessors were.

Despite these two varied approaches, the effect of this reorganization effort appears to be the same; they are both far more resilient in the face of attempts to remove their leaders from the equation; which has until recently been far and away the most effective way to stop street nazis, white nationalist organizations, and far right gangs. When you cut off the head, the snake does not in fact die anymore. This in turn means that antifascists and law enforcement agencies (as much as they are useful in this endeavor, and believe me, it's not much) are forced to adapt their strategies to contain and ideally eliminate these movements and the "children" (movements) they will undoubtedly birth even if that effort is successful.

As you see in the UK now, we are rapidly escalating towards a war in the streets with violent fascist mobs that require no leaders to operate and can deploy rapidly using nothing more than social media incitement. Responding to this will require mass resistance, feet in the streets, and most importantly solidarity between everyone working together to stop these violent fascist groups; who are becoming increasingly bold as mainstreamed political fascism rallies new converts to their movements.

ISDPatriot Front and Active Clubs: Two modern models of white nationalist organizingISD analysis finds how right-wing extremist groups like Patriot Front and Active Clubs have strengthened defenses against law enforcement and policymakers.

This is a solid analysis of the ways that two of the most prominent neo-fascist groups in the US organize, namely Patriot Front and the Active Club network. Specifically, it looks at the ways they have adapted to the post-Unite the Right environment and their resilience in the face of threats from law enforcement and antifascists.

If you're not familiar with how these groups organize, this would be a very good primer. And if you're already up to speed, I still think this is a good analysis of how they have weathered certain challenges and what organizing problems they still face, in light of the fact that they take very different approaches to organizing.

(I should mention that I'm not crazy about ISD's orientation toward crafting analyses that might be useful for law enforcement. Still, this is good research that's freely available online, and there's nothing to stop the rest of us from utilizing their work for our own nefarious purposes.)

From the article:

Key Findings

Failures resulting from the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which included the doxxing of protestors, substantial financial penalties, and increased scrutiny on the white nationalist movement, forced leaders and groups to shift their tactics and organizational structures.

Specific organizational models, like those used by Patriot Front and Active Clubs, have been instrumental in making groups more resilient to disruption from law enforcement and perceived enemies.

Recent arrests of key white nationalist leaders do not appear to have had a significant impact on groups’ operations, which have continued unabated and may indicate that changes at the organizational level are generating some results.

@GottaLaff
The White nationalist group "Patriot Front" is a terrorist group.
Last year I learned about a group called Task Force Butler, that exposes #PatriotFront 's methods of attack and harassment then gets local DAs to prosecute them.
I talked to @MattBinder about them in June 2023 on his #podcast

Here's a clip of Kristofer Goldsmith, the CEO of the group, on MSNBC describing how to effectively fight them at your #Pride or #juneteenth event.
