@JessTheUnstill #Linux and #computer nerd here, just read my bio, . That aside, I don't include it in any conversation and I don't give a shit what #kernel, #os, #wm, etc. you use. Little secret, I help people use their #windows10, #windows11 and #macos machines because I like to know how everything works. When people ask about differences, I am honest and objective. Maybe one day the #FOSS purists will give up the tirade and start acting like humans. I won't hold my breath,
Passionate about operating system, I sold my soul to the penguin from the first meeting in 1995. Bidouilleur in the soul, I never stopped, to hack and experiment. Self -taught in permanent training. Big comic book fan, I also like music and motorcycle that I have practiced for many years daily.

@hosford42 @Em0nM4stodon Of course! Since you're already on Mastodon, the first thing I'd suggest is replacing all Big Tech social platforms with fediverse alternatives. That means Instagram with @pixelfed , YouTube with @peertube
, Reddit with Lemmy
Next step - switch from WhatsApp or Messenger to @signalapp
It's a secure, private messenger with end-to-end encryption (E2EE) - actually, WhatsApp is based on Signal's protocol. I also use @matrix
- it's a decentralized messenger with E2EE too. It works kind of like the fediverse - you choose a server where your messages and data are stored, and when you chat with someone, the servers federate.
You should also replace Gmail - it's pure Big Tech. I use Protom Mail
, but I'm thinking about switching to @Tutanota. Their company seems more focused on email, while Proton is building a whole ecosystem. Both are encrypted and have great privacy policies
Now, about browsing the internet - instead of Chrome or other trackers, I recommend @brave
It has a built-in ad blocker and blocks tracking scripts. It also protects against fingerprinting and other privacy threats
And what about search engines? Time to dethrone Google. I use DuckDuckGo
, @StartpageSearch, and Brave Search. Each has pros and cons, but all claim to protect your privacy.
You mentioned logging into many accounts with Google
- unfortunately, there's no universal way to switch to manual login. You have to check each service's settings one by one. Once you do, I recommend using a password manager that doesn't collect your metadata - @bitwarden
It's open-source, had no major leaks, and you can even host it yourself.
Want to go all in? Replace your operating system. It's a later step, but a powerful one. For desktop - Linux
For smartphone - @GrapheneOS
Both are privacy-focused and offer top-level security
Hope this helps you build your long-term path away from Big Tech. If you have questions, feel free to ask!

Poll of the Day — Multi-choice! Restarted
You asked for it — now you can pick all the OSes you use daily!
We know Mastodon leans techy... let’s see how that shows up in your OS mix
Which OS(es), grouped for coverage, do you use daily?
Reply with why you use it too

Wer kann mir ein #OS-Produkt empfehlen, mit dem Dateien mit Endung -msg unter #Linux angeschaut, vielleicht auch bearbeitet werden können?
Und eine vertrauenswürdige Quelle, wo ich das herbekomme?
#FediHelp #Schwarmwissen #OpenOffice #FreieSoftware statt #Microsoft ...
Please, #FOSS world, we need something like #ChromeOS
Dear Santa. For Windows-10-end-of-support-day in October, please may we have a dead simple bulletproof all-free #OS that gets old PCs online without a #Google account, and does nothing else?
The End of #Windows10 is looming. The world needs a simpler, easy, quick, snackable alternative

Idk if something like this exists.
It would be interesting to see how useful the idea of having process groups where they come with a scheduling configuration so that whilst running the OS you can use the optimal scheduling algorithm for the process groups.
Poll of the Day
Past polls got great engagement — let’s go even bigger this time!
This is Mastodon, so we know the audience is a bit more techie... let’s see how that reflects in the results!
Which OS are you using right now?

#Arikoto NOW HAS USERSPACE SUPPORT AFTER 3 OR SO MONTHS!!!
This is a HUGE step for the project and I'm glad to have gotten here.
In fact, during this I also noticed that we didn't have proper preemptive scheduling (the shell was keeping the entire kernel scheduling system alive, I have no clue why or how I did that but I did) so I fixed it!
As always, you can find it and try it out on #GitHub here:
