Guys I've been thinking about this recently
So the telegraph has existed for a while, and became widespread in 1800s. Charles Babbage worked on the first mechanical #computers in the 1820s

What would be the earliest point in time in which a #Bitcoin like #Blockchain could've been made?

As I understand it all the system needs is a #network of computers each running a program that checks for transactions

I'm wondering if a different hash function was used it could be a lot simpler to implement into hardware, but if mechanical computing wasn't powerful enough for that the earliest might've been after WWII with the code breaking machines that the Allies invented

Any boosts would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks to #Nvidia you can now save some money as a retro gamer!
Just upgrade from an expensive, useless RTX 5080 to a shiny, price-efficient GTX 580 and enjoy higher framerates in your PhysX-enabled games! :thisisfine:

Of course the bad CPU code for PhysX they specifically wrote like shit to screw up ATI also never got updated. Have fun at cinematic 30 fps!

(Nvidia dropped PhysX support for 32bit applications, causing games to either run like trash or lose functionality)

Weird question, I'm wondering.

Is there a correlation between decorating your house and customising your computer's GUI (Desktop)?

A new year a renewed #introduction

I am Dude, associated with the movie but there the comparison ends.

An updated #Introduction for 2025:

I’m a dad, #cat whisperer, #computer nerd, occasional #gamer, and #movie lover. I’m a #quality minded #professional and I make my own #homebrew beer. #freebsd. Enthousiast I love #fitness #walking #programming in #python and #3Dprinting. Busy with #homeassistant and more.

So Microsoft introduced Recall some time ago. Seemingly most people have never heard of it. It takes a picture of your screen every 5s, so you are able to search for what you did on your computer. Personally I can not think of many uses for this functionality and none that outweigh the privacy and security implications.

Would you care to enable such functionality on your computer?

Concerned about Microsoft Windows 11 Recall? You should be.

Recall allows Microsoft’s Windows 11 Copilot+ devices to screenshot every action a person takes on their PC.

What can you do? Switching to Linux is the clear answer, but some don't know what distro to try.

DistroSea.com is a website that lets you run and test 60+ Linux distributions straight from your web browser.

Have fun!

#Microsoft’s #technology, which was detailed in a research paper published in the #science journal Nature on Wednesday, adds new impetus to a race that could reshape the technological landscape. In addition to accelerating progress across many technological & scientific fields, a #quantum #computer could be powerful enough to break the encryption that protects national secrets.

Any advances are set to have geopolitical implications.

As part of its research, #Microsoft built multiple topological qubits inside a new kind of #computer chip that combines the strengths of the semiconductors that power classical #computers with the superconductors that are typically used to build a #quantum computer.

When such a chip is cooled to extremely low temperatures, it behaves in unusual & powerful ways that Microsoft believes will allow it to solve technological, mathematical & scientific problems that classical machines never could.

#Microsoft now says it has created a new state of #matter in its quest to make a powerful machine, called a #quantum #computer, that could accelerate the development of everything from #batteries to #medicines to #AI.

On Wednesday, Microsoft’s scientists said they had built what is known as a “topological qubit” based on this new phase of physical existence, which could be harnessed to solve mathematical, scientific & technological problems.

Hey everyone. I must admit, I don't believe I have ever seen someone enter #utf8 #unicode characters on a #computer in a natural way. Which seems weird, because a bunch of languages use them.

I wrote a #commonLisp #asdf package that just looks up a list of symbols in a file that has every non-surrogate unicode codepoint in it, and an #emacs #elisp function that just calls the #lisp one.

Multilingual people, what can you tell me about doing this at all?

In trying to make sense of the #wrecking ball that is #ElonMusk and Trump’s #DOGE, helpful to think about Evil Housekeeper Problem. It’s a principle of #computersecurity roughly stating that once someone is in your hotel room with your laptop, all bets are off. Because the intruder has physical access, you are in much more trouble. And the person demanding to get into your #computer may be standing right beside you. #natsec #security #IT #networks technologyreview.com/2025/02/0 #CFPB #financialsystem
